The Montana Water Trust Mission
The Montana Water Trust is a private, nonprofit organization that partners with landowners to keep our celebrated streams alive and flowing.

Benefiting Landowners
- We provide landowners with flexibility to manage their water rights for instream use and ensure that such rights are protected.
- We develop mutually beneficial agreements that compensate landowners with money, tax benefits, technical assistance, or irrigation improvements.
- We provide extra operating revenue for ranches or farms.
Benefiting Streamflows
- We work to restore the 4,000 miles of chronically and periodically dewatered streams in Montana.
- We scientifically measure and monitor our project streams in conjunction with University of Montana interns.
- We improve fisheries by increasing the instream flow in aquatic ecosystems.
Benefiting Communities
- We protect recreation opportunities in Montana’s wild places.
- We work collaboratively with local and regional groups.
- Healthy streams and financially secure landowners enhance
communities and maintain Montanans’ celebrated way of life. |
